Google Business Profile Optimization: How Local Businesses Improve Visibility
8 April 2026 · 7 min read
When someone searches for a local service, the three listings in the map pack usually get the calls. The organic results below them get considerably less attention on a phone screen.
A Google Business Profile is free, and most businesses leave it half-completed. That gap is one of the easiest visibility wins available.
Complete every field, not most of them
Google favours complete profiles. Empty fields are both a ranking disadvantage and a credibility problem for the person reading the listing.
- · Exact business name as it appears in the real world — no keyword stuffing
- · Correct primary category, plus accurate secondary categories
- · Full address and service areas
- · Accurate opening hours, including holiday hours
- · Phone number, website and messaging enabled
- · A description that explains the service plainly
Categories carry more weight than most owners realise
The primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches your listing appears in. Choosing something vague because it sounds broader is a common and costly mistake.
Check what your best-performing competitors use as their primary category. If it is more specific than yours, that is worth investigating.
Photos are ranking and conversion assets
Listings with a genuine, regularly updated photo library get more engagement, and engagement feeds back into visibility.
Upload real work: completed installations, the team, the premises, vehicles and equipment. Avoid stock photography entirely — it is recognisable and it damages trust.
Use Posts and Q&A actively
- · Publish Posts for offers, new services and completed projects
- · Answer questions in the Q&A section yourself, in plain language
- · Seed the Q&A with the questions customers genuinely ask on the phone
- · Keep hours and service lists current, especially around holidays
Reviews: earn them, never buy them
Reviews affect both ranking and the decision a customer makes while looking at three listings side by side. Purchased reviews put the entire listing at risk of suspension, which is a far worse outcome than having fewer reviews.
Build a simple routine instead: ask at the point the customer is happiest, make the link easy to open, and reply to every review — including negative ones — calmly and factually.
Keep the listing consistent with everything else
Name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, social profiles and directory listings. Inconsistency dilutes the local signals that Google uses to verify your business.
A fully completed, actively maintained Google Business Profile is the highest-return local marketing task available to most service businesses, and it costs nothing but attention.
If you would rather have it set up, populated and maintained properly, that is something we handle as an ongoing service.
